This began with a suspicion.

Modern life has made extraordinary progress. It has made life safer, faster, more connected and more convenient.

But as more of life becomes easier, more of life also becomes optional. Navigation. Repair. Memory. Making. Provision. Discomfort. Conversation. Attention. Responsibility.

That raises a question I have not been able to leave alone:

What happens when capability becomes optional?

Not productivity. Not status. Not output. Capability.

The ability to meet life directly. To find a route. Repair a break. Make something useful. Sit without input. Tell the truth without performing. Contribute to a group. Carry responsibility. Endure enough friction for something meaningful to happen.

A machine, a platform, a service or another person may be able to produce the same output more quickly.

The output might be identical. The person is not.

The person who navigates becomes different from the person who is navigated. The person who repairs becomes different from the person who replaces. The person who cooks becomes different from the person who orders. The person who learns becomes different from the person who only receives the answer.

This is not nostalgia for inconvenience. Modern life produces genuine goods — safety, speed, access, comfort, reach — and none of those should be dismissed carelessly.

But the trade has a cost that does not always show up on the ledger.

This site documents that cost, and what happens when capability is deliberately brought back into contact with ordinary life.

Each Field Note is one piece of evidence. Vermont. Asturias. A gate repaired instead of replaced. A conversation that cut through performance. A meal cooked from raw ingredients. A route taken without GPS. A period of silence without input. A physical task that should have been outsourced but was not.

The framework is incomplete. The investigation is ongoing. That is the point.
