THE INVESTIGATION

This began with a suspicion.

This began with a suspicion.

This began with a suspicion.

Modern life has made extraordinary progress. Safer, faster, more connected, more comfortable. None of that should be dismissed carelessly, and this is not nostalgia for inconvenience.

But something else has happened alongside it, quietly, and I have not been able to leave it alone.

Every year, a little more of what used to be required of you becomes optional.

You don't have to find your way. You don't have to cook, or carry, or fix, or wait. You don't have to be the one somebody depends on. You don't have to sit with a difficulty until it resolves, because something will resolve it faster. You don't have to say the true thing, because there is always a smoother version available.

None of it is compulsory any more. Almost all of it can be handed to a machine, a platform, a service, or another person.

What happens to a person when less and less is required of them?

What happens to a person when less and less is required of them?

What happens to a person when less and less is required of them?

That is the question this site exists to work on. I don't have the answer. What I have is a growing pile of evidence and a working theory, and the theory goes like this:

One. The conditions go first. Modern life simply stops asking.

Two. Capability follows. What isn't demanded isn't practised, and what isn't practised quietly disappears.

Three. Usefulness goes next. If nothing is required of you, nobody depends on you.

Four. And then something harder to name. If nobody depends on you, your absence would not be noticed.

Five. What that produces is not sadness. It's restlessness.

The capability didn't go anywhere. The demand for it did.

The capability didn't go anywhere. The demand for it did.

The capability didn't go anywhere. The demand for it did.

That distinction matters more than anything else on this page.

Nothing is wrong with the person. The energy is intact. What's been removed is the outlet, and a person with capacity and nowhere to put it does not feel flat, they feel restless. They feel like something is missing without being able to say what.

Most people I have spoken to about this are not struggling. They are doing well. That is precisely what makes it strange.

Not productivity, status, or output.

The output might be identical. The person is absolutely not.

The person who navigates becomes different from the person who is navigated. The person who repairs becomes different from the person who replaces. The person who cooks becomes different from the person who orders. The person who learns becomes different from the person who only receives the answer.

Same result. Different human being at the end of it.

One thing I should say plainly

I am one person. These notes are mine, they are not controlled for anything, and I already believe the conclusion, which is exactly the problem with evidence collected this way.

So I am also looking for the notes that don't fit. The times convenience genuinely won. The times the harder path was simply worse. Those are worth more to me than another confirmation, and there will be some on this site.

If something has happened to you that belongs here, send it.

The person who cooks becomes different from the person who orders. The person who learns becomes different from the person who only receives the answer.

This is not nostalgia for inconvenience. Modern life produces genuine goods — safety, speed, access, comfort, reach — and none of those should be dismissed carelessly.

But the trade has a cost that does not always show up on the ledger.

This site documents that cost, and what happens when capability is deliberately brought back into contact with ordinary life.

Each Field Note is one piece of evidence. Vermont. Asturias. A gate repaired instead of replaced. A conversation that cut through performance. A meal cooked from raw ingredients. A route taken without GPS. A period of silence without input. A physical task that should have been outsourced but was not.

The framework is incomplete. The investigation is ongoing. That is the point.

ONE EXPERIMENT

In 2026 I designed a small field experience as one experiment inside this investigation. It is called LINEAGE.

In 2026 I designed a small field experience as one experiment inside this investigation. It is called LINEAGE.

Four nights. Six people. Phones surrendered, no clocks, no job titles. Built around changed conditions rather than more content: movement, practical work, silence, contribution, and conversation with nowhere to hide.

LINEAGE is not the answer to this investigation. It is the field site.

I am not waiting for the investigation to finish before running it, because the investigation will not finish. What I know already is enough to build the conditions. What I don't know yet is what precisely they produce, in what order, and in what proportion, and the only way to find that out is to put people in them and pay attention.

The people who come are not buying a conclusion. They are part of the reason there will eventually be one.
