THE CONDITIONS

Thirteen conditions. Four families. One working map.

Thirteen conditions. Four families. One working map.

Thirteen conditions. Four families. One working map.

Every field note begins with a different event.

A walk. A repair. A conversation. Something made, endured, provided or passed on.

But the same conditions keep appearing beneath them.

Conditions in which the body is required, the physical world is acted upon, other people depend on what you do, or your attention has to operate without being directed from outside.

There are currently thirteen.

Thirteen is a lot to hold. Four is not.

The conditions are grouped into four families:

These are not rules for living. They are not virtues, personality types or an argument for rejecting modern life.

They are a working map of the conditions that modern life increasingly allows us to avoid, and what their absence may produce in a person.

The families overlap. Each condition has a primary home, but none operates in isolation.

The map is incomplete. That is the point.

The map is incomplete. That is the point.

BODY

You against the physical world

BODY contains the conditions that require physical participation.

Your body is not only something to exercise or maintain. It is how you cover ground, carry weight, negotiate terrain and continue when progress requires effort.

01

MOVE

What it is

Physical effort with consequence

What its absence produces

Restlessness. A body carried around rather than used.

02

EXPLORE

What it is

Finding your way by judgement and observation.

What its absence produces

The world shrinks to the known. Incuriosity mistaken for contentment.

05

ENDURE

What it is

Staying with difficulty until it resolves.

What its absence produces

Fragility. Small difficulties start to feel large.

HAND

What you do to the things around you.

HAND contains the conditions through which you act directly upon the physical world.

You make something that did not exist. You care for something that needs continued attention. You restore something that would otherwise be discarded.

The result exists outside you. It carries evidence of your involvement.

04

MAKE

What it is

Bringing something into existence with your hands.

What its absence produces

Nothing you touch bears your mark. No evidence you were here.

12

REPAIR

What it is

Restoring rather than replacing.

What its absence produces

Everything is disposable — objects, then relationships, then the belief that anything can be fixed.

11

TEND

What it is

Sustained care for something that needs you.

What its absence produces

Nothing is in your care. No reason to come back.

PEOPLE

What you are to others.

PEOPLE contains the conditions that only become visible through your relationship with other people.

Whether someone depends on you. Whether your contribution changes the outcome. Whether you are known and accounted for. Whether something you know continues through someone else.

Status cannot substitute for any of them.

03

PROVIDE

What it is

Meeting a need for someone who depends on you.

What its absence produces

Nobody needs anything from you. Responsibility becomes abstract.

07

CONTRIBUTE

What it is

Usefulness with visible, immediate consequence.

What its absence produces

Surplus. Nothing would change if you stopped.

06

BELONG

What it is

Being known and accounted for by a group.

What its absence produces

Surrounded by people and still unaccounted for.

13

SHOW

What it is

Handing on a capability by doing it in front of someone.

What its absence produces

What you know dies with you. Nothing you learned outlives you.

SELF

What you are when nobody is asking.

SELF contains the conditions that reveal how you operate without an external demand, useful outcome or audience directing you.

Whether you can leave time unfilled. Do something that achieves nothing. Say what you actually think before turning it into the version that will land best.

09

SIT

What it is

Stillness without input.

What its absence produces

Can’t be alone with yourself. Every gap gets filled.

08

PLAY

What it is

Activity with no outcome and no stakes.

What its absence produces

Self-consciousness. Everything becomes performance because nothing is allowed to be pointless.

10

TELL

What it is

Saying the true thing without positioning first.

What its absence produces

You perform instead of speak. Nobody knows what you think, including you.

ON SHOW

The condition that points beyond you.

The condition that points beyond you.

The condition that points beyond you.

SHOW is not formal teaching.

Teaching suggests a classroom, a hierarchy and someone formally appointed to instruct.

It is not transmission either. That sounds mechanical and cold.

It is simpler and older than that.

One person works while another watches. They try. They fail. They are corrected. Eventually, they can do it without the person who showed them.

Several of the conditions require other people. SHOW is different because it has an explicit direction of travel.

Something known by one person becomes capability in another.

It is the only condition concerned directly with what continues beyond your own involvement and, ultimately, beyond your own lifetime.

It is also the condition that gives LINEAGE its name.

It is also the condition that gives LINEAGE its name.

A lineage is a chain of people who showed one another how.

A WORKING MAP

The conditions are being tested, not declared.

The conditions are being tested, not declared.

The conditions are being tested, not declared.

NORDRA did not begin from a neutral position.

I already suspected that modern convenience was removing demands that still mattered to us. That makes confirming evidence easy to find and potentially easy to overvalue.

The field notes are therefore not presented as proof.

Some support the working theory. Some complicate it. Others show that convenience genuinely improved the outcome and that choosing the harder path would have been pointless.

Conditions may be renamed, moved, divided or removed as the investigation develops.

SHOW was not part of the original twelve. It was added because the act of passing on capability kept producing something that PROVIDE, CONTRIBUTE and TELL did not adequately explain.

If the map is doing its job, it will continue to change.

ON FIELD

NORDRA investigates.
LINEAGE creates the conditions.

NORDRA investigates.
LINEAGE creates the conditions.

LINEAGE is one designed field within the wider NORDRA investigation.

For four nights, six people enter an environment in which BODY, HAND, PEOPLE and SELF are brought back into play simultaneously.

The conditions are not taught as thirteen ideas or divided into thirteen activities. They are built into the environment, the responsibilities, the constraints and the way the group operates.

Participants experience the conditions before they receive the complete explanation.

NORDRA continues to question and refine the map.

LINEAGE creates an opportunity to step inside it.
