CURRENT THEORY

Should we look to take part in experiences that are not only self-made, but give us something beyond the experience itself?

My dad decided one day that he wanted to walk 25 miles non-stop. And rather than walking loops around his neighbourhood I suggested we do something more interesting.

A walk around London, crossing 14 bridges, with scorings for each bridge and a route that takes in some of London's best sights. We locked in the date, invited two very close family friends, and then completed the challenge.

What was interesting about the experience, was that it brought together a number of different things, and forced us into a situation that we'd all not been in for a long time.

A physical challenge - go walk 25 miles without stopping and see how you feel at the end. It is not easy, and a reminder that the body is something to be looked after, and kept in good shape.

Quality time spent with family and friends. The 25 miles took nearly 12 hours with stops included. That's a long time to spend with the same 3 people. You end up having conversations that you simply do not have when meeting for an hour.

Exploring the sights and sounds of one of the greatest cities in the world from so many previously unseen perspectives.

I got into bed that evening feeling as if the day was properly used. Not just lived, but used, on so many quantifiable, and some not, levels.
